The Short & Sweet first person approach
I'm a guitarist, composer, songwriter, and sound professional.
I've written hundreds of songs including three singer/songwriter rock albums under my name, composed scores and songs for film and commercials, written pieces for jazz and classical ensembles, and performed as a guitarist on countless live gigs and studio sessions. I've also engineered, edited, mixed, and mastered everything from podcasts to demos to full length studio albums.
My most recent release, "In Defense of Daydreaming", is a full length collection of guitar-centered original instrumentals.
I completed my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Studio Guitar Performance at the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music. The degree included an academic major in Music Teaching & Learning and minors in Music Technology and Jazz Composition.
I currently teach songwriting, guitar, sightsinging, rhythmic fundamentals courses, various popular music and WEAM history courses, and content creation at two Los Angeles area college campuses. I also teach various subjects from my private studio, both in-person and remote.
I received my Masters and Bachelor degrees in music (guitar performance) from The University of Southern California. I'm a member of ASCAP, SAG, and IAJE among other professional organizations.

Doug Mattingly was raised in a working class suburb of Baltimore, Maryland (USA), the first-born of an all-around artistic father and a mother who worked in the medical field.
As a child and teen, Doug experimented with a number of the arts including painting, drawing, sculpture, music, acting, film making, poetry, and short story writing. At age 11, he began studying guitar, which quickly became an obsession.
Doug received an academic scholarship to attend Calvert Hall College, High School, an all boys Catholic school in Towson, Maryland. And although he was accepted into his high school's renowned music and visual art programs, the straight A student continued to balance his love of the arts with year round sports that included soccer, basketball, and baseball.
But as his teenage years wore on, Doug's attention began to focus more and more on guitar, and on improvisation.
When the time came for Doug to choose a college and a major, the often elusive but solidly "pragmatic" blue collar side of him chose music; the thinking being that he could always "make a living with his hands".
He received a full academic scholarship to the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music, which landed him exactly where he wanted to be - in the middle of Los Angeles, California.
Fours years on, Doug received his Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance. Within a few months of graduation, he was on the road with a rock band for the better part of a year. He toured much of the United States, even opening for a few international acts along the way. Doug eventually landed back in LA where he played in as many as four stylistically diverse bands at a time. He also began booking his first professional recording sessions as a studio guitarist for regional and local talent.
A couple years later, Doug was back at USC earning his Masters degree in Guitar Performance. This time he studied privately with Jazz guitar legend Joe Diorio on a performance scholarship.
Doug would return to hometown Baltimore where the next several years found him releasing three full length solo singer/songwriter-rock albums. He wrote, produced, and performed all compositions, following with several promotional music videos. He received local, regional, internet, and college radio airplay while appearing in print, digital, and radio interviews. His sophomore release "Building A Monastery" was voted "Best Local Album" in Baltimore's Citypaper.
Ultimately, Doug would make his way back to Los Angeles to pick up where he had left off with gigging, songwriting, teaching, sound design, scoring , and even a little dialogue editing.
Post pandemic, Doug completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Studio Guitar Performance at the University of Southern California. The terminal degree includes an academic major in Music Teaching & Learning and minors in Music Technology and Jazz Composition.
Dr. Mattingly studied with seven-time Grammy winning composer Vince Mendoza, multi-platinum producer, mixer, and engineer Brian Malouf, Bebop guitar legend Bruce Forman, and renowned music education researcher Peter Webster.
